Hummingbird Sensing Technology and COSMED are celebrating the twentieth anniversary of a technology partnership that continues to produce industry-leading performance in the assessment of the cardio-respiratory and metabolic function in healthcare.

A leader in the design, development and manufacturing of non-invasive cardio respiratory testing systems for the clinical, research and sports fitness markets, Italy-based COSMED has worked with UK-Based Hummingbird since 1991 for the supply of high-quality sensor technologies to ensure accurate and safe patient monitoring. Working in close partnership to maximize the benefits of constantly evolving technologies, Hummingbird has supplied generations of sensors used for measuring respired CO2 and O2.

The partnership continues today with the use of Hummingbird’s acclaimed Pm1111E O2 sensor in COSMED’s Quark series line of products, including solutions for lung function testing, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing and Resting Metabolism measurement. Designed to offer breath-by-breath, mixing chamber and canopy dilution technique gas exchange, COSMED products rely on the Pm111E, thanks to proven accuracy and stability, fast response, extended range (0-100% O2), exceptional linearity and a maintenance-free design.

A compact, fast-response sensor module, the Pm1111E utilises Hummingbird’s unique paramagnetic oxygen technology for a fast, linear, highly stable and selective measurement in a non-depleting, rugged package. With high accuracy, a long operating life and ultra-low calibration requirements, the Pm1111E is the ideal sensor to meet the high standards for quality, reliability and performance demanded by COSMED for ultimate product performance.

As Hummingbird and COSMED enter their third decade of partnership, the two companies are moving forward with the forthcoming integration of the next-generation paramagnetic technology offered by the Hummingbird Paracube platform into new COSMED technologies.

As part of a wide portfolio of oxygen generation products, AirSep’s Commercial Products Division manufactures High Purity Oxygen Plants, which are standard, single train, turnkey systems capable of a generation capacity of up to 3000 SCFH. As the second stage of the high purity Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) process requires the further enhancement of produced oxygen purity from 95% to 98-99%, AirSep requires exceptionally accurate measurement to ensure this high level of purity is consistently maintained.


As a world leader in oxygen sensing technologies, HUMMINGBIRD was approached by AirSep to help review and improve the performance of their existing installed analyser systems, with a goal of extending intervals between servicing times to minimise potentially expensive plant downtime.


In collaboration with AirSep’s development team, HUMMINGBIRD proposed replacing the existing analyser with the Pm1111E, a compact, fast-response sensor module which utilises a unique paramagnetic oxygen cell for fast, linear, highly stable and selective response in a non-depleting, rugged package. By delivering high accuracy, a long operating life and ultra-low calibration requirements, the Pm1111E was the ideal replacement to upgrade oxygen purity measurement performance for AirSep.


The result is highly accurate, reliable and stable oxygen monitoring suitable to meets the varied needs of AirSep’s customers, including hospitals and other medical applications, thermal or chemical oxidation, cylinder refilling and metal fabrication. Initial installations have already been highly successful, with excellent performance being delivered to customers in the field.

Hummingbird’s acclaimed paramagnetic oxygen sensing technology is used in PHASEIN’s ISA sidestream gas analyser range, which combines innovative PHASEIN technologies with advanced features to optimize all aspects of medical gas monitoring.

Available as stand-alone plug-in-and-measure analysers or as easy-to-integrate build-in modules, the ISA Sidestream range offers all functions required for a complete multigas analyser, from an intelligent light emitting gas inlet to an advanced flow controller and a rugged micro pump. Oxygen monitoring for the ISA sidestream is provided by Hummingbird’s Pm1116 Paramagnetic Oxygen Sensor Module, a compact, digital fast response transducer designed for measurements in anaesthesia applications.

Using Hummingbird’s unique paramagnetic oxygen cell, the Pm1116 offers a fast, linear, accurate, highly stable and selective response in a non-depleting unit, ensuring the ISA Sidestream delivers fast response for expired breath oxygen measurement with high accuracy and reliability.

As the world’s smallest fast response Paramagnetic oxygen sensor, measuring just 43.3mm(l) x 30mm(w) x 33.5mm(h) in size, the Sprint has been developed by Hummingbird to address the form factor issues that affect the design of end-user medical equipment. Using leading-edge manufacturing techniques, Hummingbird has been able to transfer the exceptional benefits of Paramagnetic oxygen sensing into an ultra-compact housing, immediately solving the considerable problems medical manufacturers face in integrating reliable sensing technology into limited space.

Firstly, all members of Servomex staff would like to express their sincere condolences with the people of Japan following the recent tragic events.


 


In conjunction with Spectris Asian procurement division, Servomex operations have conducted a thorough review of its supply chain. At this time we are unable to identify any components or sub-assemblies that are at risk of experiencing extended deliveries and therefore there is currently no requirement to extend standard lead times of Servomex products.


 


Of course, we appreciate the dynamic nature of this difficult situation and will continue to review our supply chain on an ongoing basis and immediately advise of any updates.
